The good fight

John Yousif turns people into fighters and givers.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

In just eight weeks, John Yousif changes people.
At his Fight Club in Hallam, he teaches “everyday people” how to box.
For him, boxing is like life.
“Life is a combination of hits. There are times you have got to shield yourself, there are times when you’ve got to hit back.
“There’s times you’ve got to sit back and reflect on what’s going on.”
Mr Yousif also takes his clients to volunteer at a Berwick soup van to get a new perspective on their problems.
“The first stop is in Berwick among $1 million properties. There are between 50 to 85 people lining up each night.
“It kind of shocks people. They don’t realise how good they have got things.”
His latest set of Fight Club graduates have just completed their eight-week course.
They are set to put on a ‘Fight Night’ that raises money to support a charity in Cambodia run by one of the clients.
The charity helps provide badly-needed water filters and sturdier huts to thousands of secluded villagers in Cambodia.
The Fight Night of sparring sessions is at Urban Gym, Factory 16, 94 Abbott Road, Hallam on 29 September, 7pm. Doors open at 6pm. Cost $10 including a sausage barbecue.
