Council offers ‘relief options’ with rates

Casey Council has offered “potential relief options” to help those struggling to pay their rates as the coronavirus plunged the livelihoods of many into crisis.

In a statement to residents on 27 March, council said: “While rate payments for the City of Casey are currently due, council is aware that some people may experience challenges paying their rates, either due to our Customer Service counters being closed or financial hardship due to the Coronavirus pandemic.”

“Where possible council is providing flexibility to affected customers and encourages anyone unable to meet their payment by the due dates to contact council as soon as possible to make arrangements and discuss potential relief options,” council said in the message.

Interest on all current overdue accounts has been suspended until 30 June.

While council’s customer service counters are closed, staff are continuing to work as usual and are available to answer residents’ questions over the phone or email.

“Those account holders paying by direct debit will continue to have their payments deducted on 28 March, April and May unless otherwise advised by the ratepayer.”

Council has also advised residents who usually pay cash at a counter to contact their local bank branch to find out what assistance they might be able to provide.

“The majority of ratepayers already use payment options that do not require face-to-face contact including BPAY and credit card over the phone or via our website. Payment can also be made at the Post Office,” council said.

In the statement, council said its economic development team would also free to speak with local businesses severely impacted by the pandemic.

This includes support and advice available from the Federal and State Governments.

“Additionally, we are developing a package of local initiatives to offer support and relief to our community which will be announced soon,” council said.

“With the situation changing rapidly, council is constantly reviewing resourcing needs while ensuring the health and safety of staff and the community, as we continue to deliver vital community services where we can.”
