Cases creep back up

Active Covid-19 cases have crept back up over the weekend in Casey, according to the state’s latest health data.

Active infections now stood at nine – up two since Friday 5 June while the city’s overall tally at 70.

In the past 24 hours, Victoria’s cases rose by two to 1687. Of them, 1595 have recovered.

In nearby council areas, Greater Dandenong’s total tally remained steady on 18 and Cardinia 16 with zero active cases respectively.

There have been 177 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission.

Currently seven people are in hospital, including two patients in intensive care.

Of the new cases recorded on Sunday 7 June, one was detected in returned travellers in hotel quarantine. The other was in a resident of an aged care facility in north-eastern Victoria.

The person is currently being isolated in hospital where they were transferred for an unrelated condition. About 25 remaining residents of Hawthorn Village in Bright have been placed in quarantine and contact tracing has begun. The families of residents have been advised of the situation.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said it was great progress had been made in Victoria slowing the spread of coronavirus, thanks to Victorians playing their part, staying at home and getting tested.

“Our clear advice was not to attend last Saturday’s protest as thousands of people flooding the city in close contact was a risk. If you attended and go on to develop any symptoms, no matter how mild – it is critically important that you go and get tested,” he said.
