Tuesday 10 August is Census Night. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Australia’s largest and most important survey.

Census data is used to plan and fund services and programs, including health care, education, infrastructure and housing.

It is important that every person is counted on Census night so that residents have access to the services they need when they need them.

The Census can be completed online, by paper, or with help from Census staff.

People can start their Census as soon as they get instructions if they know who will be home on Census night.

Most households should have now received instructions in the mail to complete online. This will have a unique Census number and temporary password.

Some households will receive a paper form. Once completed, they simply return it to the ABS using the reply-paid envelope that will be provided.

There are instructions on the form if people prefer to complete online.

In areas where Covid-19 restrictions are in place, the ABS is working with the state government and local service providers to make sure people experiencing homelessness are counted safely on Census night.
