With the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge now underway, Member for Narre Warren South, Gary Maas, is encouraging schools and teachers to promote the challenge, and families to support their children’s reading at home.
Open to students between early childhood and Year 10, the challenge invites students to set a reading goal for the year, promoting the importance of reading for children and students, and motivating them to become readers across genres, authors and styles of literature.
“From toddlers to teenagers, the Premiers’ Reading Challenge is about reading as many different types of books as possible – instilling a love of reading into every Victorian child,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.
This year’s theme of ‘Explore, Learn, Enjoy’ encapsulates the adventure and pleasure reading gives us, no matter our age.
And any book in any language counts towards the Challenge, whether it’s picture books, short stories, poems, non-fiction books, or the 1462 page feat Les Misérables.
“The Premiers’ Reading Challenge is a long-standing program encouraging children to engage in the joyous world of reading for a lifetime of stories, knowledge and imagination,” Gary Maas MP added.
“I encourage as many students as possible in Narre Warren South to take part in this year’s challenge.”
Children who have not yet started school are also encouraged to join the challenge by reading 40 books with the help of their families.
