Local residents, police and community groups came together on Saturday at Berwick Waters for Safe Plate Day.

The community event was co-ordinated by Casey Neighbourhood Watch, Frasers Property Australia and Sikh Volunteers Australia, who were on hand on the day to fit anti-theft screws to vehicle number plates.

There was also a spotlight put on safety inside cars with free child car-seat checks and child safety restraint fittings.

Representatives from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council were on hand to install GPS anti-theft vehicle trackers as part of a joint initiative with Victoria Police.

Wet weather didn’t deter more than 100 people from attending, with the Lions Club of Berwick and Lions Club of Narre Warren keeping them well fed with a fundraising sausage sizzle.

The GPS trackers and child car-seat safety checks proved most popular.

“It was great to see people come together on the day to support an important community safety initiative,” Frasers Property Australia residential Victoria general manager Sarah Bloom said.

“Safe Plate Day really highlighted how strong the local community is.”
